Duxford 18th & 19th June 2011

  1. Saturday 18th members of Just ordinary Men met up in the car park of the Imperial war museum Duxford a former Battle of Britain airfield and now home to the Airborne forces museum. Our aim was to inform members of the public as to what equipment the Para of 65 years ago used, and most importantly was to meet and speak to the veterans who came to visit. The day started with setting up the kit. Alex came with the jeep and Matt brought the trailer. It was also good to see Paul up on his feet, only 4 weeks ago on his first jump he managed to break his leg. Ian set about the troops getting everyone up to speed with the way we were going to play it.

With the rest of the lads we put all the tents up we were set up for the Sundays event. Not before having a drink in the most surreal pub I have ever been in. Only hours before there was just a field and a patch of grass. Within a few hours a pub was standing complete with a bar, carpets and dartboard. A picture of the King and notices telling us not to waste were everywhere.

We had a very good time and left in the late hour’s, for the next days event.

Sunday started at 1000hrs with a bit of light drill to blow out the cobwebs and have a quick look round the site. The public started to turn up and we got to work on them. There were lots of people telling us their stories. At dinnertime we started parachute training.

This made the regular members of the Parachute Regiment ask how did we know some of the drills we were talking about. After explaining that a lot of it was research and more than a bit was practical experience because we were all members of Pathfinder.

I got the chance to try on the LLP & LLRP. There were members of Para Sigs ,Para Regt and RLC EoD to name a but a few, it was good to see there kit but we did get some funny looks when we told them we had jumped. We all visited the Airborne Assault and were very impressed with the kit set up and the way things were shown. The day drew to a close with a drive past down the Perry track and runway of a large number of military vehicles and of course we did not let the side down. Trying to race a Landrover Wolf with a Jeep was not to be missed.

Alex at the wheel driving like a man possessed.

At 1700hrs we started to pack up and by 1800hrs we were all set for the off.

On the hole it was a very good event and we hope it takes place next year.
